As the five- paragraph formula sets a structure between ideas with the use of having an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs to demonstrate analysis and a conclusion referring back to the thesis statement and acknowledging final statements. As this method has been used throughout many years upon my academic learning through middle school to highschool. I grew used to this format structure and find it helpful when constructing and organizing my thoughts and ideas to further my statements. I have used the inverted pyramid style or the triangle method, as a template to write essays to incorporate critical thinking and help me establish deeper connections to my personal life experiences. I find these templates fairly helpful because constructing an essay with a step by step process or rubric , makes my writing pieces stronger with the use of sufficient information, while still developing well thought ideas with outside references. Down below is a visual representaion of the inverted traingle/pyramid!
"In general, news stories are organized using the inverted pyramid style, in which information is presented in descending order of importance. This allows the audience to read the most crucial details quickly so they can decide whether to continue or stop reading the story"(Scanlan, 2003). This template was a helpful tool for me in my academic writing.
The paraburger compares to the five-paragraph formula with giving more detailed description upon each paragraph and how each paragraph should contain both the evidence and reasoning, prior to backing up your claim and making your argument stronger. As the template contains basic components, such as clarifying the claim in the first paragraph (Top Bun), giving reasoning (Condiments: Ketchup/ Mustard/Mayo), providing textual evidence or data to support the claim (Cheese/Lettuce/Tomato), explaining the example given (Meat Patty) and finally the conclusion paragraph that connects all body paragraphs to give a final disclosure (Bottom Bun). I believe that the five-paragraph formula is no longer a rhetorically effective choice for writing an academic essay for college-level courses because it limits a students ability to go beyond whats instructed. The students depend more on following a step by step rubric, then connecting their ideas and engaging with personal meaningful work.
